At a special session of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia, Vahagn Khachaturyan was sworn in as President of the Republic.
The special session of the National Assembly for the swearing-in of the 5th President of the Republic of Armenia, Vahagn Khachaturyan, is being held at the Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concert Complex. The session is chaired by Hagop Arshakyan, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, who is exercising the powers of the Speaker of the National Assembly.
At the special session of the National Assembly, Vahagn Khachaturyan, placing his hand on the Holy Gospel and the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia, took the oath: “Assuming the office of President of the Republic, I swear to be faithful to the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia, to be impartial in exercising my powers, to be guided only by state and national interests, and to devote all my strength to the strengthening of national unity.”
Following the swearing-in, the national anthem of the Republic of Armenia was played, and His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians, offered a pontifical blessing.
Attending the ceremony are Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, Speaker of the National Assembly Alen Simonyan, who had been exercising the powers of the President until now, ministers, and other officials. Deputies from opposition factions are not attending the special session.
Invited to the presidential swearing-in ceremony are diplomats accredited in Armenia, state, public and cultural figures of the diaspora and the homeland, high-ranking clergymen, extra-parliamentary forces, businessmen, officials, and representatives of NGOs.
Khachaturyan’s candidacy for the presidency had been nominated by the “Civil Contract” faction. The National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia had elected Vahagn Khachaturyan as President of the Republic at its session on 3 March. Vahagn Khachaturyan has been elected President of the Republic for a term of 7 years.
