Armenia has refused to acquire old armaments, announced today, 24 August, the Minister of Defence of the Republic of Armenia, Arshak Karapetyan, in Russia.
“We are going to take practical steps to develop our cooperation with Russia; we plan to have quality armaments, we plan to have new armaments, we have refused to acquire old armaments, that is our policy. It is better that we have fewer, but quality, and clearly know that those armaments will work,” he stressed during a briefing with journalists.
The minister also pointed to another issue: “We must try to have our own weapons production,” said Karapetyan, insisting that here too there is support, in the form of opening joint enterprises.
“We are going to do that quickly; we, as a nation, must be able to produce our own weapons,” stressed the minister.
According to the minister, another issue must also be resolved: not to allow intermediaries between the Ministry of Defence and manufacturing enterprises. In his view, if these three conditions are maintained, we will have a modernised army: “And we will be able to withstand the threats facing us.”
The head of Armenia’s defence department is on a working visit to Russia; today he attended the “Army 2021” military-industrial conference-exhibition held at the “Patriot” centre. The Minister of Defence, according to a ministry statement, also had a series of working meetings with the heads of military-industrial companies.
