Greece’s Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias delivered a clear message in Yerevan to those countries attempting to redraw maps: revisionist policies will fail. Armenpress reported that Dendias made this statement during a joint press conference with Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan.
“Greece has repeatedly stressed that it supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states, and that, of course, also applies to our good friend Armenia. We believe in the inviolability of borders,” said Dendias.
He noted the fact that a few days ago Armenia’s territory was being bombarded by Azerbaijani forces. He expressed Greece’s solidarity with the government and people of the Republic of Armenia.
“I would also like to send a clear message to those countries that are trying to redraw maps. My message is this: revisionist policies will fail. I would cite one such additional force — Turkey, which is trying to take advantage of this turbulent situation to be disrespectful of stability. We are witnesses to Turkish rhetoric; allow me to say that Turkey was also opposed to Greece sending several defensive weapons to the Greek islands. And this is happening in conditions where Greece is acting within the framework of its obligations, and these obligations derive from the Treaty of Lausanne,” stressed the Greek Foreign Minister, adding that Turkey is opposed because Greece does not allow its territories to remain unprotected.
According to him, Turkey is currently threatening to start a war against Greece. The Foreign Minister stressed that Greece is ready and willing to begin a constructive dialogue with Turkey within the framework of international law, and is also ready to defend itself and its rights.
The two foreign ministers also discussed security challenges in the Caucasus in Yerevan.
“Our position regarding Nagorno-Karabakh remains unchanged; we support reaching peaceful, mutually acceptable solutions within the framework of international law. International law is the ‘Holy Scripture’ for international relations and politics.”
He stressed that solutions and peace cannot be built in conditions where there is a threat of the use of force. Greece will continue to support the start of bilateral negotiations. Nikos Dendias added that they believe humanitarian issues must be resolved immediately, and humanitarian law must be respected.
“From this perspective, we welcome Prime Minister Pashinyan’s courage, who has proposed a new approach for the future of this region. However, as President Macron said yesterday, solutions and peace cannot be built in conditions of the threat of the use of force,” said Dendias, adding that Greece is also ready, together with EU partners, to support dialogue in the matter of finding peaceful solutions.
