Azerbaijan’s president has proposed installing checkpoints on the Lachin corridor and on Armenia’s border, but negotiating the Lachin corridor arrangements — and that too through the use of force — is not acceptable for Armenia. This was stated today, 22 February, by Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan at a press conference with Luxembourg’s Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn.
“Our answer is unequivocal — the Lachin corridor arrangements have been negotiated and signed, including by Azerbaijan’s president; I am speaking of the 9 November document,” he said.
Ararat Mirzoyan recalled that this approach by Azerbaijan is not new, but neither is the Armenian side’s position.
“We can begin unblocking those roads at any moment, from the minute we accept that all those roads being unblocked must operate within the sovereignty and under the legislation of the countries through whose territory they pass,” said the Armenian Foreign Minister.
Ararat Mirzoyan recalled that the Armenian side rules out an aggressive policy of changing the agreements reached through the use of force or extracting new concessions at the expense of one side’s interests.
Days ago, Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev stated in Munich that he had proposed to the Armenian side the installation of control checkpoints on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border on both sides of the so-called “Zangezur corridor” and between Lachin and Armenia.
