Today marks the 15th anniversary of the bloody events of March 1.
In the early morning of March 1, 2008, police attacked opposition protesters who had spent the night on Yerevan’s Freedom Square, dissatisfied with the results of the presidential election.
Later that same day, as a result of clashes that broke out between protesters and security forces in and around the square adjacent to the statue of Alexander Myasnikyan, 10 citizens were killed and 200 people were wounded.
In 2018, the criminal case of March 1 was reopened, and charges were brought against several former officials, including the second President of the Republic of Armenia, Robert Kocharyan.
The charges brought by the Special Investigative Service related to the overthrow of the constitutional order by prior arrangement and the violent seizure of power.
