In 2019, Armenia’s net migration stood at -16.0 thousand, according to data published by the Statistical Committee. This is the lowest figure in recent years. In 2018, net migration was -18.2 thousand, in 2017 -24.0 thousand, and in 2016 -24.9 thousand people. At the same time, Armenia’s natural increase has declined. Thus, while in 2016 natural increase was 12.4 thousand, in 2017 – 10.6 thousand, in 2018 – 10.8 thousand, in 2019 it stood at 9.9 thousand people.
As of the end of 2019, Armenia’s de facto permanent population stood at 2 million 959.2 thousand. Compared to the beginning of the year, the permanent population decreased by 6.1 thousand.
The average age of the permanent population as of the beginning of 2019 was 36.7 years (36.5 in 2018), for men – 34.6 (34.5 in 2018), and for women – 38.5 (38.2 in 2018). In January-December 2019, the population viability index — the ratio of births to deaths — stood at 137.6%, compared to 142.0% in the same period of 2018.
In 2019, 36,131 people were born in Armenia, 26,252 died, and natural increase was 9,879. During the year, 15,561 marriages and 3,879 divorces were registered.
