The President of the Republic of Armenia, Armen Sarkissian, has departed from Saudi Arabia on a working visit to the United Arab Emirates, the presidential office has reported.
At the airport of Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, the President of Armenia was seen off by the country’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Adel al-Jubeir, and, in accordance with official protocol, the Armenian state flag was raised at the airport.
The President had left for Saudi Arabia on a working visit on October 26.
Noting that Armenia has had no diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia since independence and that no Armenian official has ever visited that country, the presidential office described Armen Sarkissian’s visit as a historic step.
“This unprecedented event is unequivocally a turning point in Armenia’s international relations,” the presidential office had asserted.
