Armenia’s Representative to the UN: “The Issue of 19 Armenian Prisoners Is an Urgent Humanitarian Matter”

During the general debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Armenia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Barouyr Hovhannisyan reaffirmed Armenia’s support for strengthening the UN human rights system, with the aim of preventing human rights violations and ensuring accountability. Ambassador Hovhannisyan presented the efforts put in place by Armenia, in particular toward strengthening human rights protection instruments, promoting equality between the sexes and advancing the agenda of protecting children’s rights. During the general debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Armenia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Barouyr Hovhannisyan reaffirmed Armenia’s support for strengthening the UN human rights system, with the aim of preventing human rights violations and ensuring accountability.

Ambassador Hovhannisyan presented the efforts put in place by Armenia, in particular toward strengthening human rights protection instruments, promoting equality between the sexes and advancing the agenda of protecting children’s rights.

Turning to regional developments, Hovhannisyan noted that, although efforts to strengthen peace continue, a number of urgent humanitarian issues still need a solution. Among them are the continued detention of 19 Armenians, the clarification of the fate and whereabouts of missing persons, as well as issues relating to cases of enforced disappearances.

He stressed that the solution of these issues will contribute to the strengthening of peace, the formation of trust and reconciliation in the region.
