Azerbaijan’s Authorities Are a Threat to Regional Peace and Security: Foreign Ministry

“Azerbaijan’s top leadership is not ready for peace,” the spokesperson for Armenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Anna Naghdalyan, issued a statement regarding the “bellicose declarations” of various Azerbaijani government circles. In the Foreign Ministry’s commentary, it was specifically stated: “In recent times, the top leadership of Azerbaijan and various departments have been making anti-Armenian competitive statements devoid of substantive content, reminiscent of nervousness.

One gets the impression that Azerbaijan’s leadership is trying to outdo its previous anti-Armenian statements, which is no easy feat under the conditions of decades of consistent anti-Armenian propaganda.”

The Foreign Ministry spokesperson noted that it is telling that Azerbaijan’s dictatorial authorities, who preach hatred before their own people and issue threats of war, are using the fight against the “Corona” virus to commit widespread violations of human rights in their country — a fact that has been voiced by a number of authoritative international and regional organisations.

“Nevertheless, however much the preaching of hatred against Armenians and the threats of war are aimed at a domestic audience, such statements seriously damage the peace process and indicate that it is not the people of Azerbaijan, but Azerbaijan’s top leadership that is not ready for peace,” the commentary said.

In the Foreign Ministry’s statement, it was noted that Azerbaijan’s leadership’s anti-Armenian actions have already received their legal assessment by international courts. Thus, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) judgment in the case of “Makuchyan and Minasyan v. Azerbaijan and Hungary” condemned the Azerbaijani state’s racist policy, expressed through the acts of pardoning, releasing and rewarding the murderer Ramil Safarov.

Azerbaijan’s current authorities, who view Armenophobia as a primary source of internal consolidation and legitimacy of power, are a threat not only to Artsakh, Armenia and the entire Armenian people, but to regional peace and security, the statement said.

The Foreign Ministry emphasises that the security system of Artsakh and Armenia is sufficiently comprehensive and stable to effectively address and counter such threats.
