Baku declares that it intends to sign a peace agreement with Yerevan if Armenia is ready to take serious steps. The official statement does not clarify what steps are meant.
“If the Armenian side views the peace agreement not as another act of keeping the public informed, but as a serious step, then it is time to take clear steps. We want to reiterate that Azerbaijan is ready for it,” the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.
Baku again reminded of the five principles of normalization that it had presented to Armenia, emphasizing that the peace agreement must be based on them.
Commenting on the statement of Armenia’s Security Council that international deterrence mechanisms are necessary to prevent further tension, Azerbaijan’s foreign policy department insisted that the best form of deterrence is international law, including “non-interference in the internal affairs of other states and respect for the sovereignty of states and their internationally recognized borders.” According to the statement, Armenia does not uphold international law and “cannot speak of an international deterrence mechanism.”
Insisting that official Yerevan violates the provisions of the trilateral statement of the leaders of Armenia, Russia and Azerbaijan, Baku declares that it is this that “increases the degree of tension in the region and endangers peacemaking efforts.”
