The professional subdivisions of the Ministry of Environment keep the issue of blue-green algae activity in Lake Sevan at the center of daily attention.
At this time, blue-green algae activity is being observed in parts of both Greater Sevan and Lesser Sevan.
According to professional consultations, the main causes of the dense growth of blue-green algae in the lake and the decline in water quality are the high water temperature of the lake since winter and the high percentage of phosphorus in the lake.
During the previous year, approximately 100 hectares of forested area were cleared from the coastal zones. This year, the work is continuing.
In parallel, the mapping and inventory work has begun on buildings and structures subject to demolition, located below the 1901.5-meter mark in the coastal areas of Lake Sevan.
The document “Issues of Restoring and Preserving the Balance of the Ecological System of Lake Sevan and the Necessary and Planned Actions for Their Regulation” has been developed and presented to the partner donor organizations of the European Union for funding. A sum of approximately 5 million euros has been allocated for these purposes.
By the Ministry of Environment, 3 measures requiring urgent solutions have been selected:
– Prevention of wastewater flow from Gegharkunik Province into the lake:
– Re-cultivation of areas occupied by subsoil use permits:
– Implementation of works to clean the beds of polluted rivers in the Lake Sevan catchment basin.
