Residents of the town of Berdzor were warned yesterday evening that they must hand over their homes and leave the town by 30 November, 18:00.
Mary Melikyan, who has lived in Berdzor for more than ten years and is the chief accountant of the hospital, had taken refuge in Goris with her two children during the days of the war, and is now preparing to move to Ashtarak, where she has already rented a house.
“They had warned us to take our things out, we took out what was absolutely necessary, we had left the rest, thinking we would come back and live, but since it turned out this way, why would we come back,” Mary said during a conversation with NEWS.am.
About two years ago she had bought an apartment in Berdzor on credit, and now she is forced to leave her own home. Mary is not interested in why such a decision was made, because she does not know who should answer that question.
“Now the important thing is that whatever we try to take out of the house and save is to our benefit. Who should answer that question? People like us are also themselves. They too were taken by surprise today, whatever you say to them,” she said, adding that according to conversations, the mayor of Berdzor could later be an Azerbaijani.
“Just as they entered the other places, they will enter here in the same way. The leadership of Armenia says, stay, you can live with them, join their ranks, that is, become their citizens. Why, can we live with an Azerbaijani, can you raise a child here—you cannot,” Mary noted.
The residents of Berdzor are hurrying to gather their belongings to move to Armenia.
“I am leaving one house and one shop in Haykazyan, and three houses in Lachin, two of which were bought in cash. And the other house, which was given to me, I have completely renovated, where two families can live, it is that big a house, and how is the state going to help me when I leave these houses and go, they give nothing, nor does it even cross their minds to give,” noted a man from Berdzor, then added: “Today a whole nation has been left outside, only one Stepanakert remained and that’s it.”
It should be noted that as of this moment, there has been no official statement about what fate awaits Berdzor.
