The Armenian serviceman who lost his way and was taken captive has been returned. This was announced by Goris Deputy Mayor Menua Hovsepyan.
It should be noted that the RA Ministry of Defence had announced yesterday that contract serviceman of military unit N of the Armed Forces, Private Arthur Katanyan, having lost his bearings in the terrain due to fog, had ended up in territory under the control of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces.
The Azerbaijani military department insists that a reconnaissance-sabotage group of the RA armed forces, taking advantage of unfavourable weather conditions, crossed the line of contact in the Lachin district on 8 June. The Armenian Ministry of Defence had denied this report.
As reported by Sputnik Armenia, serviceman Arthur Katanyan, who lost his way due to fog and ended up in territory under the control of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces, is from the Syunik region.
The head of the serviceman’s community of residence told Sputnik Armenia during a conversation that Arthur has been a contract serviceman for about 3 years.
“The incident occurred during service due to the weather. It was quite cloudy, and he lost his way. In the area where Arthur was, the positions are quite close, the soldiers are almost standing face to face with each other,” said the community head.
According to him, Arthur is 25 years old, unmarried, and lives with his parents. Arthur’s parents have been informed of the incident. At this moment, according to the community head, negotiations are underway for the Azerbaijani side to return Arthur.
