On 3 October, under the chairmanship of Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Avinyan, a meeting of the state commission supporting the preparatory work for the regular census of 2020 was held. The commission is called upon to coordinate the commitment to conduct the census once every ten years, which the Government of the Republic of Armenia undertook under the RA law “On Census” adopted back in 1999.
The Deputy Prime Minister noted that the census is very important, since the collected and analysed data will become the basis not only for the development of demographic policy, but also for the organisation of electoral processes and the strategic planning of socio-economic policy. Accordingly, every effort must be made to ensure the high quality of the census and the accuracy of the information collected.
Tigran Avinyan said that not only the result of the census is important, but also the process, since it is an excellent exercise, first of all, to identify the gaps existing in the research capacities of state departments, as well as to develop them.
During the meeting, the Deputy Prime Minister announced that, in order to test the developed methodology and its technological solutions, a pilot census will be carried out in the Artik community of Shirak Province and in the communities of Aramus, Akunk, Kamaris and Mayakovski of Kotayk Province.
Tigran Avinyan instructed the Chairman of the Statistical Committee to keep the quality implementation of the pilot census under personal supervision and to present information on the results.
