On 26 August, Armenia’s Defence Minister David Tonoyan had a telephone conversation with Andrzej Kasprzyk, the Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office. This was stated on her Facebook page by the Defence Minister’s press secretary, Shushan Stepanyan.
“During the conversation, D. Tonoyan drew Ambassador A. Kasprzyk’s attention both to the video message circulated today in Azerbaijani media featuring Armenian army officer Gurgen Alaverdyan, and to the previously released video clip, stressing that the aforementioned recordings constitute a gross violation of internationally established rights, including international humanitarian law.
The Geneva Conventions guarantee the protection of the rights of prisoners of war, their right to respect for their honour and dignity, which must preclude any kind of humiliating treatment, regardless of the conditions and the location in which the person finds himself under the authority of the opposing side.
Junior Sergeant Gurgen Alaverdyan is clearly reading a text prepared in imperfect Armenian that was imposed on him,” she wrote.
