The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ruled in the case “Nikol Pashinyan v. Armenia” that Pashinyan’s right to liberty and security of person and freedom of assembly was violated. Armenia’s incumbent Prime Minister did not submit a claim for financial compensation from the state.
The case concerns the imprisonment of Pashinyan, then an opposition figure, which took place after the 2008 elections, when Pashinyan was supporting presidential candidate Levon Ter-Petrosyan. He remained in detention from October 2009 until January 2010. The ruling states that Pashinyan’s right to freedom of expression and assembly was also violated.
