The European Court of Human Rights has given Azerbaijan until 4 June to provide information on the status of the 6 Armenian servicemen captured from the border section of Gegharkunik province. This was reported by the “Lurer” news service of the Public Television Company, adding that the captives have not yet been visited by the Baku office of the Red Cross.
Zara Amatuni, head of communications programmes at the Armenian office of the International Committee of the Red Cross, told “Lurer” that daily dialogue is being conducted with the authorities of both countries to secure visits to the captives. Red Cross representatives have visited other prisoners of war and civilian detainees held in Azerbaijan and have conveyed video messages from their parents to them.
“The main purpose of the visit is first of all to register these persons, then to begin visiting them on a regular basis, primarily to check the conditions of detention, the treatment of these persons, as well as to help establish contact with their relatives,” Amatuni said.
Let us recall that on the morning of 27 May, Azerbaijani forces captured 6 Armenian servicemen while they were carrying out engineering works in the border section of Gegharkunik province of the Republic of Armenia.
The Republic of Armenia applied to the European Court of Human Rights on 27 May, demanding the protection of the fundamental rights of the 6 captured Armenian servicemen.
