Within the framework of the plenary session held at the European Parliament from May 17-21, a discussion took place on May 20 on the issue of prisoners of war from the recent war in Nagorno-Karabakh. Deputies from Italy, Portugal, France, Bulgaria, Lithuania and other countries in the European Parliament condemned Azerbaijan’s actions and called for the return of Armenian prisoners of war.
After several hours of discussions, the European Parliament adopted a resolution with 607 votes in favour, demanding that Azerbaijan release all Armenian prisoners of war and detained civilians without any preconditions.
The resolution also condemns Azerbaijan’s acts of violence, the destruction of cultural monuments and border violations.
On the other hand, on May 19, in its report on Turkey, the European Parliament reaffirmed its call to recognise the Armenian Genocide, while also calling on Ankara to refrain from anti-Armenian propaganda and hate speech and to fully honour its commitments to protect Armenian culture.
