The President of the French National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, said today that France does not recognize the independence of Mountainous Karabakh.
“This is in line with the international law to which we are subject. Both the French executive and the National Assembly have adopted resolutions and condemned Azerbaijan’s attack and the blockade of the Lachin corridor,” Braun-Pivet said during a joint press conference with the President of the Armenian National Assembly, Alen Simonyan.
According to her, it is not for France to decide what status Mountainous Karabakh may have in the region.
“Our position is clear: the status of Mountainous Karabakh must be defined within the framework of international law, and international law states that there is a corridor that must be opened and the free movement of people must be restored,” said the President of the French National Assembly.
She noted that France is concerned about the situation created in Mountainous Karabakh, and the blockade of the Lachin corridor creates humanitarian dangers.
According to the President of the French National Assembly, the path to possible peace and dialogue is not entirely exhausted: “We have not yet tried everything to achieve peace. Our strength is one hundred percent directed toward that settlement. We must not abandon dialogue.”
