Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov today, in an interview given to the media, touched upon Armenia’s domestic political developments.
“We see the events taking place in Yerevan, we see how much the opposition is trying to exploit this situation. Of course, there are also honest people there who are pained that everything ended this way,” he said.
According to Lavrov, the illusions that the 7 regions should always have remained in the state they were in 1.5–2 months ago should not have existed.
“Responsible authorities should have explained to the people that at some stage this had to be implemented, in accordance with the principles that had been on the negotiating table for many years and were paving the ideal path for the settlement of the Karabakh issue, without blood, without harming anyone’s security, first of all the Armenians of Karabakh and other ethnic groups living there, were also beneficial for Armenia and Azerbaijan, there would be unblocking of communications, all this should have played a positive role, first of all, for Armenia’s economy, which suffers from these restrictions,” he noted.
The Russian Foreign Minister stated that now these ties are being restored, Armenia’s economy should breathe freely, and there should be transport links with Armenia’s partners.
“If we do everything we have agreed upon, and I do not yet see signs that anyone is trying to violate the agreement, everyone will benefit. We are in contact with our Armenian colleagues — yesterday Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, and today I spoke with Armenian Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan. I am confident that the Armenian government understands the extent of its responsibility, understands that this was signed taking into account the interests of its nation, and I hope the integrity of this agreement will be preserved and it will be implemented,” Lavrov said.
He also noted that he sees many political forces that understand what has happened and are drawing the right conclusions.
