The sole candidate for president of the Constitutional Court is CC judge Yervant Khunkdkaryan. The CC’s procedural session is to continue today at 10:30. Newly elected CC judge Edgar Shatiryan told reporters this during a conversation.
Shatiryan said that no vote has taken place so far.
He noted that one candidate had self-nominated: “One of the judges nominated another candidate, after which that candidate withdrew. In essence, there is one candidate.”
The reporters asked him to name the candidate, and Shatiryan said, “The names are known to the online media.”
Judge Shatiryan did not deny the news circulating in the press that the candidate nominated by CC judge Hrayr Tovmasyan is Ashot Khachatryan, and the self-nominated candidate is Khunkdkaryan.
Asked why the session is lasting so long, the judge said, “I think it is natural, because everyone has questions. I do not think the issue is about reaching a quick solution.”
Shatiryan stated that the self-nominated candidate had given a programmatic speech: “It was followed by a question-and-answer session. Some of the judges have already put their questions to the candidate. There are further questions as well.”
Asked why he himself did not wish to put forward his candidacy, the judge said, “I did not consider it appropriate.”
