According to the agreements reached between Armenia and Azerbaijan in August 2022, from April 1, 2023, the Lachin corridor connecting Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia must end at the Kornidzor bridge. From April 1, the route connecting the territory of the Republic of Armenia to the Lachin corridor will pass through the Kornidzor-Teh route, entirely within Armenian territory. This was reported by Armenia’s National Security Service (NSS).
The statement says that after August, a section of the road connecting the Lachin corridor to Armenia, after the Kornidzor bridge, again passes through Azerbaijani territory. That section of the road, along its entire length and its adjacent area, is controlled by Russian peacekeeping forces, the NSS reports, again referring to the August agreements.
According to the agreements previously reached between Armenia and Azerbaijan, in the last days of March the border guards of the two countries were to be deployed on both sides of the border along the aforementioned section.
During the deployment, according to the Armenian National Security Service, map misreadings came to light. “In some places, the Azerbaijani side, without waiting for the previously agreed clarifications, has begun to take positions and carry out engineering (construction) works,” the statement said.
The National Security Service (NSS) added that according to the Armenian side’s calculations, there are five such points where the Azerbaijani side is positioned 100 to 300 meters ahead of the border.
“An agreement has now been reached that the cartographers of both sides will clarify the situation. The Armenian side approaches the situation with the logic of not allowing escalation. In the section in question, the Armenian army had no positions, because positions are deployed not on the border line, but on nearby strategic heights. And the protection of that section of the border was to pass to the border troops, according to the aforementioned agreement,” the service stated.
