There is a need to shorten the term of compulsory military service. The army reform concept is now ready, major reforms are to be carried out, and within the framework of that logic we intend to transition to a professional army model. This was stated by RA National Security Council Secretary Armen Grigoryan in an interview given to the “Public Television Company,” referring to the provisions on the reform of the RA Armed Forces in the government’s new programme.
“This means that there will be a reduction in the number of conscripts, or rather a reduction in the term of military service. A professional army does not mean contract military service; it implies that a person must devote all his time to service. For example, in the case of contract service, they hold a position for a certain period of time and are free for a certain period of time. We want to completely change these approaches. We want border control and protection to be entirely transferred to the Border Guard troops; for that purpose, the NSS must expand the number of border guard troops, and the army must entirely focus on mastering military affairs, and only when the need arises to defend the borders, only then engage in military operations,” Grigoryan noted.
