The National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia adopted the draft decision on lifting martial law in the Republic of Armenia, which had been initiated by the opposition factions “Bright Armenia” and “Prosperous Armenia.” The draft decision received 118 votes “in favor,” 1 “against,” and 1 “abstention” at the March 24 session of the National Assembly.
Although this opposition initiative had received a negative conclusion from the relevant standing committee of the National Assembly, NA President Ararat Mirzoyan had proposed voting in favor of the draft at the plenary session, taking into account the circumstance that there are political understandings, that early parliamentary elections are to be held, which is at least a path toward a resolution and the restoration of political stability, and that the government, one way or another, would have to come forward with an initiative to lift martial law in the coming days.
Before the vote, the head of the “My Step” faction, Lilit Makunts, stated that the faction would vote in favor.
Martial law had been declared in the Republic of Armenia from September 27, conditioned by the war unleashed by Azerbaijan against Artsakh.
According to the RA Law on the Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly, the President of the National Assembly shall sign and publish the decision of the National Assembly on declaring martial law lifted immediately, unless a different timeframe is set by that decision.
