NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has said he has “serious concerns” about the actions of member state Turkey, but insisted that the alliance is an important platform for resolving disputes with Ankara, Arab Weekly reports.
Turkey has angered some of its NATO allies with its stance in the dispute with Greece over maritime areas and its role in the conflicts in Syria, Libya and Mountainous Karabakh.
NATO countries’ foreign ministers are to gather in Brussels next week for a personal meeting with Biden’s team.
NATO has long sought to smooth over internal differences with Turkey, pointing to the role Ankara has played in hosting millions of Syrian refugees and in the fight against the extremist group “Islamic State”.
Last year the alliance created a “conflict resolution mechanism” to try to avoid clashes between Turkey and Greece, as tension in the eastern Mediterranean rose sharply.
