The number of citizens seeking to obtain Armenian citizenship from the US has sharply increased after the velvet revolution.
According to data from the Consulate General of the Republic of Armenia in Los Angeles, the number of those wishing to obtain Armenian citizenship has doubled over the past two years.
Voice of America reports that since independence, the government’s approaches to obtaining Armenian citizenship and dual citizenship have changed. Armenia has a law on dual citizenship, adopted in 2007 and revised in 2017, according to which Armenian citizens have the right to hold more than one citizenship.
“We have a diaspora, and many of our compatriots want to obtain Armenian citizenship. They avail themselves of that right in the manner prescribed by law. After the revolution, the aspirations and perceptions of our compatriots changed completely; they look at Armenia with different eyes and have a great desire to connect with Armenia. Having citizenship or dual citizenship is one of those ways,” said Armen Baibourtian, Consul General of the Republic of Armenia in Los Angeles and Ambassador.
