Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan has described the current situation in the coastal area of Lake Sevan as an “environmental disaster.” The Prime Minister said this during the presentation of the newly appointed Minister of Environment, Romanos Petrosyan.
“The issue of Lake Sevan is one of our most serious problems. Over many years, we create the problem through our daily activities, and then, when the problem manifests itself, we say, ‘Where is the minister who let Sevan turn green?’ Unfortunately, we do not notice that even in the case of the activity of the worst minister or government, this could not have happened in the course of one week, one month, one year, or even 10 years. It is the result of our daily way of life—starting from our forms of recreation and economic management, starting from what structures are built on the shore of Sevan and with what logic. Walking on the shore of Sevan today, we see an environmental disaster at every step,” said Pashinyan.
On 29 July, Vahe Jilavyan, who is performing the duties of Minister of Environment, stated during a press conference that there is no problem related to greening and swimming in Little Sevan.
