The police had received a report that there was an armed person at the Erebuni Plaza hotel in Yerevan. The police had told Azatutyun that field units had been dispatched to the scene.
As Ashot Aharonian, head of the RA Police Department of Public Relations and Information, told journalists, the person who fired the shots surrendered his weapon to the police.
According to Aharonian, the acting chief of police, Arman Sargsyan, personally negotiated with the armed person. There were no hostages taken, and the situation was under control.
It should be noted that the office of Armenia’s second president, Robert Kocharyan, and the 5th Channel television company are located in the Erebuni Plaza.
Viktor Soghomonian, head of the office of Armenia’s second president, found it difficult to say whether the incident was related to the office, noting that many institutions operate in the Erebuni Plaza.
A source from the UN office in Armenia, located in the building adjacent to the Erebuni Plaza, told Azatutyun that the office’s main staff and guests had been evacuated.
