The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia strongly condemns the terrorist act committed in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor province, as a result of which the spiritual pastor of the Armenian Catholic Church of Qamishli, Father Hovsep Bedoyan, and his father, Father Abraham Bedoyan, were brutally killed, and the church’s deacon was wounded.
The MFA recalled that the clergymen’s lives were cut short at a moment when they were serving the war-ravaged community of Deir ez-Zor. According to various sources, the terrorist organization “Daesh” has claimed responsibility for the killing of the clergymen.
“The military incursion carried out in northeastern Syria over the past month and the resulting intensification of terrorist activity make the civilian population, including national and religious minorities, particularly vulnerable. The ongoing persecutions and killings on the basis of identity must be decisively condemned by the international community,” the statement said.
The RA MFA expressed its deep condolences and support to the families of the victims, the Armenian Catholic community of Syria, and the entire Syrian-Armenian community, wishing them strength, resilience, and fortitude of spirit.
“Armenia will continue to contribute through humanitarian assistance to the stabilization of the humanitarian situation in Syria,” the statement noted.
