House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel (Democrat, New York) has led members of the House of Representatives in pressing President Donald Trump to cancel his invitation to President Erdogan, emphasizing that “Erdogan’s bloody campaign in Syria has destabilized the region and endangered US national security.” This was announced by the Armenian Assembly of America.
“President Erdogan’s decision to invade northern Syria on October 9 has had disastrous consequences for US national security, has caused rifts within the NATO alliance and has created a humanitarian crisis. Turkish forces have killed civilians and members of the Syrian Democratic Forces, America’s most important partners in the fight against the terrorist group ‘Islamic State,’ and have also displaced more than one hundred thousand people from their homes in northern Syria,” the lawmakers wrote.
“In light of this situation, we believe that this is a highly inappropriate time for President Erdogan to visit the United States, and we call on you to cancel that invitation”:
