The risks of escalation of the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border remain. This was stated by CSTO Secretary General Stanislav Zas, speaking at the OSCE conference on cooperation in the security sector (OCSS).
According to him, in the six months following the end of military operations in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone, positive developments have been recorded in the process of settling the situation as a result of the adoption of the trilateral statement by the President of Azerbaijan, the Prime Minister of Armenia and the President of the Russian Federation in the Caucasian region of the CSTO. “The deployment of the Russian peacekeeping contingent and the efforts of international negotiators to resume a comprehensive settlement of Nagorno-Karabakh create the basis for establishing long-term peace. The situation on the ‘ground’ is gradually stabilising. The main thing is that there is no longer any shooting.”
He noted that the CSTO is closely following the development of the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, particularly in the border areas of Armenia’s Syunik Province. “We welcome the intention of the parties to resolve the issues of the state border crossing by peaceful means. We see there the prospect of establishing long-term peace. At the same time, the risks of escalation of the situation remain,” he said.
