Armenian-Georgian relations have a centuries-old history, and we attach great importance to our friendship and cooperation with neighbouring Georgia. This was stated by Armenian President Armen Sarkissian on 15 April during a meeting in Tbilisi with Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili.
Below we present his remarks.
“Armenians have been an active part of Georgia’s cultural, economic, social and political life for centuries. Today, too, Armenian business (entrepreneurship) makes a significant contribution in Georgia, and Georgian partners are working successfully in Georgia.
We are cooperating successfully in transport, energy, tourism, education, agriculture and culture, and in many other fields. The cooperation is bilateral and multilateral.
Under the cooperation of the two presidents, we can encourage the development of modern business relations between the two states. I want to assure you that I will be ready to work with you and your partners so that business and friendly relations develop very quickly.
We also addressed issues of ensuring regional security and stability, naturally taking into account the new realities created as a result of Azerbaijan’s military attack against Armenia with Turkey’s open support regarding Nagorno-Karabakh.
I presented to my Georgian counterpart the Armenian side’s approaches and viewpoints on the NK issue, and particularly stressed that it is impossible to establish lasting peace and ensure stability in the region without a just settlement of the Artsakh issue. I also noted the possibility and necessity of resuming the process of peaceful settlement of the conflict within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group.
I emphasised the enormous humanitarian problems arising from the war, including the importance of finding prompt solutions to the release of prisoners and hostages, or those who have such status, by Azerbaijan. This is a very important issue. I also stressed the inadmissibility of Azerbaijan’s policy of exploiting the post-war situation, engaging in misanthropy and trampling national dignity. This policy cannot contribute to the formation of a climate of dialogue.
During the meeting, I also addressed the issue of the protection of Armenian historical and spiritual cultural heritage in the territories under Azerbaijani control.
The President and I will do everything, we will intensify our countries’ efforts to contribute to deepening cooperation in all directions.
Madam President, I hope to see you in Armenia in the near future.”
