The US Embassy in Armenia has issued a statement regarding the 2021 local elections:
“We highly value the participation of the Armenian people in the local self-government elections held on October 17, November 14, and December 5, and the continued dedication demonstrated by the Armenian people to following the democratic path is also commendable.
A small number of Embassy staff observed the elections as visitors. We are pleased to note that the elections generally took place in a calm, peaceful atmosphere and were well organized. The diversity of results highlighted the competitive nature of the elections, the resilience of Armenia’s democracy, and the significant progress Armenia has registered over the years.
We have also received reports of pressure against opposition candidates. We encourage the authorities to investigate allegations of abuses. While we work to perfect our own democracy, we welcome the Republic of Armenia’s commitment to its agenda of democratic reforms and look forward to strengthening our bilateral ties, based on shared democratic values.”
