The authorities are preparing to hold snap elections in the near future, and I believe a decision regarding the date will be announced today or tomorrow. This was stated by Environment Minister Romanos Petrosyan during a briefing with journalists today, 18 March, after the government session.
Asked what prompted the return to that agenda, he replied: “What prompted it was that, despite the rejections voiced by both parliamentary and extra-parliamentary opposition to resolving the country’s political crisis through snap elections, the crisis itself was not being resolved, in our assessment. We must also note that the opposition’s street struggle had no significant effect and was not welcomed by our public either. Nevertheless, our decision remains in force — to pursue a resolution to that issue through the constitutional path of snap elections.”
Asked whether there is a public demand for snap elections or not, the minister replied: “The public did not voice a demand through the opposition’s mandate and mouth, but we see the resolution of political processes exclusively through the constitutional path and through snap elections.”
