BBC correspondent John Fisher has visited the territory of Artsakh that has come under the control of Azerbaijan and has tried to find out how and where the Armenian Zoravor Holy Mother of God Church of Mekhakavan (Jabrayil) disappeared.
Fisher first used a phone location system to find the church. However, upon reaching the site, he noticed only the two trees that, according to the photo, were not far from the church. As for the structure itself, there is not even a trace of it.
When the correspondent asked where the Armenian church had disappeared, the Azerbaijani policeman there said it had been destroyed during the war. But Fisher countered, insisting that the building could not have been destroyed during the recent Artsakh war, since a video has been circulated online featuring Azerbaijanis, filmed at the time when Mekhakavan came under Azerbaijan’s control. In the video, the church is seen standing and Azerbaijanis are standing on its dome.
“Azerbaijan has said that ethnic Armenians can remain in Nagorno-Karabakh, but Armenia accuses the neighbouring country of damaging and destroying Armenian cultural heritage, including churches and monuments,” the piece notes.
