During the 49th session of the UN Human Rights Council, the resolution on the “Prevention of Genocide” proposed by Armenia was adopted by consensus.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ information service, the resolution, which is traditionally presented by Armenia, assesses current dangers and challenges and outlines the steps that must be jointly implemented by UN member states to prevent the scourge of genocide, ensure its recognition, restore justice, provide reparations, punish the guilty and ensure accountability.
The resolution enjoys broad support, as evidenced by its co-sponsorship by countries representing all five regional groups, the statement said.
This year, the resolution raises issues such as assessing the risks of conflict and taking steps to prevent them, the abuse of new technologies, including the dangers of spreading disinformation through social platforms, and reaffirms the need to ensure the universal ratification of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
The resolution proposes organizing a conference within the UN framework dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Convention. The conference is also expected to discuss social platforms and the inadmissibility of using them as a tool of hatred.
