Michael Carpenter, the US Permanent Representative to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), addressed the South Caucasus during a press briefing, noting that the United States is deeply engaged in the region, particularly in the process of regulating Armenian-Azerbaijani and Armenian-Turkish relations:
“I must say that we are deeply engaged in this process (the Armenian-Azerbaijani regulation—Ed.), we are very interested in the question of securing a peace agreement, and we will continue to seek ways to organize meetings between the ministers (the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan—Ed.) and the leaders:
It is no secret that we work very closely with our EU partners on this matter, and, while greatly supporting the EU’s efforts at the border, we are considering the deployment of OSCE instruments, which, at Armenia’s request, has deployed a needs assessment team on the Armenian side of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border:
Our goal is simple: we want to see the border demarcated as soon as possible. We want to see the peace agreement between the two sides as soon as possible, so that peace and stability return to the region, human rights and the security of all individuals living in this region are respected, and we can open a new page in the history of the South Caucasus. It is obvious that reaching that final state will take some time, but we are committed to doing everything to support that outcome,” said Carpenter.
