US State Department Deputy Spokesman Vedant Patel addressed the Armenian-Azerbaijani negotiations held yesterday under US mediation during a press briefing.
“The United States is pleased to host Armenian Foreign Minister Mirzoyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Bayramov this week for negotiations, as they work together toward a peaceful future for the South Caucasus region.
The Secretary of State believes that direct dialogue is key to resolving issues and achieving lasting peace, and that is where he is deeply engaged, and where Senior Adviser Bono is also deeply engaged. And that is (achieving lasting peace – ed.) what we will continue to pay close attention to.
And we believe that peace is possible between these two countries, and we are glad to welcome them,” said Patel.
Addressing the State Department’s vision regarding the likely successful outcome of the foreign ministers’ negotiations, Patel noted: “Ultimately, it is for these two countries to decide what that means. In the end, we believe that peace is possible in the South Caucasus. And that is what we seek — peace and stability between these two countries in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.”
He declined to provide any further details, advising everyone to wait for the results of the negotiations.
