Shortly after assuming the office of Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to the United States, Lilit Makunts is already taking steps to give new impetus to Armenian-American relations.
This was reported by Al Arabiya, which conducted an interview with Armenia’s first female ambassador to the US.
“We are still in a phase of recovery after the war — both mentally and economically,” noted the 37-year-old ambassador.
Speaking about the war unleashed against Artsakh by Azerbaijan in 2020 and the resolution of the Armenian-Azerbaijani issue, Makunts noted that the best path to resolving the matter is the OSCE Minsk Group.
“In 1994, when we won [the First Nagorno-Karabakh War], we returned all prisoners of war. It is strange that they (ed. — Azerbaijan) continue to hold Armenian prisoners of war,” Makunts noted.
She emphasized that as a result of the Azerbaijani side’s actions, many Armenians have been displaced, and the Armenian government is now drafting laws to provide assistance to internally displaced persons.
“Armenia is proud of its democracy. After the war, we decided that we must increase diplomatic efforts in the world’s major capitals.
Our only desire is peace. We have never initiated an attack on any country and have no plans to do such a thing,” declared RA Ambassador to the US Makunts.
