The village of Khoznavar in the Syunik Province, which became a border village after Karvachar was handed over to Azerbaijan on 1 December, is only 1 km from the border.
“The village is in a pit, surrounded on three sides, and they are in a higher position than us. All the houses are about 1 km from the border. And the village road passes through a dangerous spot — about 600-700 metres from the border,” the head of the community administration, Varo Grigoryan, said during an interview with NEWS.am, noting that the Azerbaijanis have not yet taken positions near the village border, and that the border is being held on our side by the military.
Although the Azerbaijanis have not yet approached the village border, there is uncertainty among the villagers as to whether they will be able to continue living in the village when the adversary is so close. In the village, which has 350 residents, people are mostly engaged in livestock breeding, and they are now deprived of pastures, since these have remained on the other side of the border.
“We lived off that land, now nothing is left for us, people want to leave the village. There is a man who has 10 head of cattle and says he cannot keep them. They want to sell, and they are quoting such prices that people are going mad. For four head of cattle they are offering the price of one,” he said.
