Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has instructed the creation of an independent body to fight against the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, during the latest meeting of the Supreme Advisory Committee.
According to the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet, the idea of creating such a body by the Turkish president emerged a few months ago, following the introduction of a resolution recognising the Armenian Genocide in the US Congress and the filing of lawsuits against Turkey by Armenians in American courts. However, the spread of the coronavirus forced the Turkish authorities to postpone the creation of this body.
The idea of creating a body to deny the Armenian Genocide was put forward by Cemil Çiçek of the Supreme Advisory Committee, and he issued a statement on the matter with the Turkish president’s adviser Seyit Sertçelik. The speakers stressed that there is no separate body in Turkey that deals with the denial of the Armenian Genocide and the development of strategy. It was noted that a number of ministries participate in the fight against the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, but a unified policy has not been developed.
A report prepared by 5 universities on the same topic was also presented.
The Turkish president accepted the participants’ proposals and instructed the creation of an independent body that will deal exclusively with efforts to deny the Armenian Genocide.
