The EU welcomes the release of 5 Armenian prisoners of war by Azerbaijan, who were captured in November, and calls for the immediate release of the remaining 57. This was stated on his Twitter page by the EU’s Secretary for External Relations, Peter Stano.
According to him, “this contributes to the strengthening of trust between the two countries, which is important for a durable peace in the region.”
It is worth recalling that yesterday, through the mediation of Russian peacekeepers, Azerbaijan handed over 5 prisoners of war to Armenia, while Yerevan handed over one.
It should be noted that to this day, the exact number of Armenian prisoners of war held in Azerbaijan is not known. The authorities refuse to give a precise figure, citing “state secrecy” and the fact that it “could harm the process of their release.”
According to unofficial data, their number ranges between 100 and 235.
