Gabriel Sargsyan, the leader of Armenia’s chess team, became the vice-champion of Europe yesterday, Wednesday, 6 April, at the European Individual Chess Championship held in Slovenia.
The homeland grandmaster, securing 8.5 points out of a maximum of 11, shared first place with German player Matthias Blübaum, who was declared champion on tiebreak.
In the final round, Gabriel Sargsyan, playing with the white pieces, recorded a draw on the 6th move against Spanish player Jaime Santos Latasa, while the titleholder recorded his draw against Croatian Ivan Šarić.
It should be noted that the chess players who occupied the first 20 places secured their tickets to the 2023 World Cup tournament.
