In the local self-government body (LSG) elections held on December 5, the “Civil Contract” (CP) won in the majority of the 36 communities, as National Assembly deputy from the party, Vahagn Aleksanyan, wrote on his Facebook page, with preliminary data in 25 of them.
At the same time, the ruling party was defeated in several major cities.
The alliance headed by Masis’s incumbent mayor, criminal defendant Davit Hambardzumyan, won, ensuring Hambardzumyan’s continued tenure.
In Abovyan, “Prosperous Armenia” received the most votes, around 46 percent, and its candidate, former head of Gagik Tsarukyan’s security, former National Assembly deputy Eduard Babayan, will also need votes from other forces to be elected mayor. In 2019, Babayan was sentenced to 3 years and 6 months in prison and was released under an amnesty.
In Vanadzor, the alliance headed by former mayor Mamikon Aslanyan won, receiving about 38.6 percent of the votes, which means that without the votes of another force, Aslanyan will not be elected mayor. In the previous elections, Aslanyan headed the Republican Party’s list.
“Civil Contract,” whose list is headed by Lori Governor Aram Khachatryan, received about 24.7 percent of the votes.
