During a meeting in Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Nikol Pashinyan on his victory in the parliamentary elections.
Before the start of the closed meeting, Nikol Pashinyan noted that he has been compelled to discuss security-related issues more frequently with the Russian leader, as the regional situation is not stable and, in particular, the Armenian-Azerbaijani border is tense.
According to Putin, sensitive issues can be resolved when one has the support of the people. The Russian leader also stressed that Pashinyan has that support: “Therefore, I congratulate you and expect a serious discussion on all the issues we have been actively discussing recently,” the Russian leader said.
Pashinyan addressed security-related issues and the active discussions that have recently been taking place around them. He spoke about the unstable situation created in the region, emphasising the role and efforts of the Russian President and Russia in concluding the ceasefire.
“After the deployment of Russian peacekeepers, the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh is stable, but at times pockets of instability arise, and today I want to share with you my assessments of why this is happening. The situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border is also unstable. We have spoken about this on numerous occasions; here too there has been a constant source of concern over the past two months,” Pashinyan said, expressing the hope that a discussion on this matter would take place today.
Referring to the return of 15 Armenian prisoners of war, Pashinyan again emphasised the role of the Russian side and recalled the telephone conversation with the Russian President on 24 June, one week after which the return of the prisoners of war took place.
Speaking about economic cooperation and the construction of the South Caucasus railway, Pashinyan noted that the modernisation of railway complexes in Armenia is currently proceeding at full pace.
According to him, large investment programmes are being implemented, the volume of Armenian exports to Russia will grow this year, and Armenia has already received more than 110,000 doses of the Sputnik V vaccine.
