A Turkish court has sentenced journalist Hakan Akgün to seven months in prison for a post made on social media, Diken reports.

Akgün was given a suspended sentence after being found guilty of “inciting enmity or hatred” and “insulting religious values” over his March 2020 post on Twitter, in which he mocked the government’s aid campaign during the pandemic by altering lines from the Quran.

On 2 April 2020, Akgün was taken into custody for this post and arrested the following day, and in May he was released.

The journalist appealed to the Constitutional Court, which ruled last year that Akgün’s rights had been violated, and he was paid 40,000 liras (5,334 dollars) as compensation.

The journalist said he would appeal the court’s ruling in the tweet case.
