Lufthansa, Europe’s leading airline, is returning to the Armenian market after a hiatus of many years.

The Lufthansa airline group will operate up to 16 weekly flights to Yerevan starting from August 13.

Marcel Wenden, director of “Armenia International Airports” CJSC (Closed Joint-Stock Company), said in a conversation with journalists: “The presence of the Lufthansa group in Armenia has quite broad significance; it gives citizens of the Republic of Armenia the opportunity to travel to 280 destinations in 100 countries. Currently, none of the airlines operating flights in the Republic of Armenia offers anything like this. This combination allows the Lufthansa group to carry more than 100 million passengers annually,” noted Marcel Wenden, adding that this step provides an opportunity for an increase in the number of tourists arriving in Armenia from various countries.

Flights will operate daily on the Yerevan-Vienna route, three times a week on Yerevan-Frankfurt, five times a week on Yerevan-Brussels, and once a week on the Yerevan-Cologne route.

Peter Pullem, chief director of sales for Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe of the Lufthansa group, noted that their group includes several other companies — the airlines “Austrian,” “Brussels Airlines,” “SWISS,” “Eurowings,” and “Lufthansa.”

Eurowings has already begun operating flights to Yerevan since last week.

René Koenzak, chief director of sales for Ukraine, Belarus, Turkmenistan and the South Caucasus of the Lufthansa group, stressed that they have considerable experience in flights to Armenia.

In response to a question from “Armenpress” as to whether there are also discussions regarding operating flights to Gyumri, Pullem noted that no such discussions exist yet.
