Yesterday a strange phenomenon was observed in the province of Syunik: black water flowed from the Shaki waterfall. Social media users circulated a video, to which Armenia’s Minister of Environment Romanos Petrosyan responded, explaining the phenomenon by saying that cleaning work is being carried out in the basin located above the Shaki waterfall, and the silt and sediment accumulated at the bottom of the basin are being cleaned and flowing away with the water.
“There is no need to worry over the Shaki waterfall ‘turning black’; the change in the water’s colour is due to the annual cleaning work being carried out in the waterfall’s basin.
Once a year, cleaning work is carried out in the basin located above the Shaki waterfall, and the silt and sediment accumulated at the bottom of the basin are cleaned and flow away with the water. Because of this, the water has taken on such a colour for some time,” he wrote on his social media page.
