Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the immediate recognition of the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Luhansk People’s Republic.
Following this, documents on cooperation were signed between Putin and the head of the DPR, Denis Pushilin, and the head of the LPR, Leonid Pasechnik.
Today, at a closed session of the Federation Council, the question of recognizing the DPR and the LPR is to be discussed.
Earlier, the leaders of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics had addressed the Russian leader with this request. During the meeting held on Monday, the members of the Security Council supported this initiative, noting that Ukraine had left Russia no alternative.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has convened a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council.
“In connection with the statements made at the meeting of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, I held urgent consultations with Emmanuel Macron and Olaf Scholz and convened a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council,” the statement reads.
