Maral Najarian, who was captured by Azerbaijani forces and has since been released and returned home to Beirut, spoke with “Shant” TV. She presented details about her capture.
“We reached Shushi, soldiers came around us, asked where we were from, we answered that we were coming from Yerevan, that Vigen’s belongings are at the hotel in Shushi, we need to pick them up. They said, give us your passports, they took them, they took the phones, the wallet, the car keys, they made us get out, said, wait here, if we see that you have no problem with us, we will send you back to Yerevan.
When they turned on the phone, they saw Vigen’s volunteer-period photo, they said they cannot let us go, that we are terrorists. They beat Vigen, then sat us in a ‘Jeep’ and took us to Azerbaijan. In the ‘Jeep’ there were gas canisters, they closed the door and windows. My eyes were open, but Vigen’s eyes were closed, I thought they were going to burn us alive,” she recounted.
She noted that she was very scared at that time, she had no hope that she would survive. “But again I was praying to God, saying, God give me strength and ability to endure, I trust you. They absolutely did not beat me. They treated me normally, I wouldn’t say very well, but normally.”
